Communitarianism's Criticism On Political Modernity

Modernity originated in the western country.As a typical form of western modern political theory,there is no doubt that liberalism theory has become the dominant theory of modern western politics.For more than two hundred years,western modern politics gradually showed a series of problems of modernity,especially after the 1970 s,the problems became increasingly serious,and the theoretical resources of liberalism could not make a strong response to it.Therefore,Communitarists such as Macintyre,Taylor,Sandel and Walzer comprehensively criticized political modernity and its theoretical representative--liberalism.Starting from the concept of human nature of modern politics,Macintyre profoundly criticized various theories and systems of modern politics.From the development of �modern self,�Taylor drew the conclusion that modern politics could be divided.Based on his criticism of Rawls' theory of justice,Sandel points out the limitations of his theory of justice in reality.From the standpoint of pluralism,Walzer criticized the possibility of modern universalism ignoring the value of social pluralism.Communitarists attributed many problems of political modernity to the theory and practice of liberalism,and then,based on the emphasis on community and common value,criticized liberalism from different theoretical perspectives,revealing many deficiencies in the theory of liberalism and its practical consequences.But communitarianism also exposes its own theoretical deficiencies in the process of criticizing political modernity.First of all,they mistakenly regard political modernity as a complete opposition to tradition,and attribute the main drawbacks of modern politics to the theory and practice of political modernity.Therefore,in their criticism,they ignore the process of political modernity's own development and the progressive significance of political modernity embodied in the specific historical background.Communitarians emphasize the listening and understanding of different value concepts in methodology,but they do not examine the value of political modernity,which makes the improvement plan they put forward unsatisfactory.
