The development of party politics in Kenya has undergone a tortuous evolution from the brief diversification of political parties at the beginning of the founding of the country to the one-party centralized system and then to the multi-party competitive democratic system. The development and change of party politics not only promoted Kenya's political reform and national modernization, completed the transformation from the one-party system of Kenyatta and Moi to a multi-party competitive party system, and led the country from authoritarian politics to democratic politics From regional nationalist politics to multi-ethnic tolerance politics, from tribal circular violence under a weak party system to peace and stability under an institutionalized party system. However, judging from the development of Kenyan party politics, its political party system is low in institutionalization, highly volatile, and very fragile. It shows distinct political forms such as personality politics, asylum politics, and tribal politics.Kenya, which has completed the transformation of liberal democracy, tends to exacerbate the existing social divisions and even create new social divisions. As a result, the liberal democratic regime cannot be consolidated, and the political development of political parties cannot shoulder the heavy responsibility of national political, economic, social and national modernization development. This thesis analyzes the development of political parties and institutionalization of political parties in Kenya from 1920 to 2019.First of all, historical reconstruction of the evolution of parties in the early colonial period of Kenya to the pre-democracy period was conducted, and the nature and characteristics of party politics under the single party system were examined. The impact of the reintroduction of multiparty politics on party politics is also evaluated. In particular, the Kenya African National League and the Orange Democracy Movement were reviewed, focusing on the structural, organizational, and management issues in the operation of political parties;discussing Kenya's antecedent political system, social divisions, regional nationalism, party politics, and state power relationship. Finally, using the theory of the institutionalization of the political party system, this paper expounds the defects of the political party system in Kenya and the effects and consequences of the unsound political party system, and studies the political parties in the context of the African mainland, this paper explores the causes of the continuous political twists and turns in Kenya from the perspective of the local factors of party politics. At present, the multi-party competitive democratic political system has been operating orderly in Kenya for many years. The rotation of political parties is only a new starting point for the development of democratic politics in Kenya. The gap between the rich and the poor and efforts to develop the economy remain serious challenges facing the ruling party and the current regime.Kenya is exploring a party system and governance model that fits its national conditions in order to seek long-term stability and development.
