Nixon period is the basic positioning period of American policy toward Diaoyu Island in China.During Nixon’s period, because of the military control and independent trusteeship of the United States after World War II,Diaoyu Island, which should belong to China, was separated from China and controlled by Japan. The intervention of the United States made the dispute between China and Japan continue. In the 1970 s,the comprehensive national strength of the United States declined relatively, and the relations between the United States,Japan and the United States and the Soviet Union were once tense. In the process of negotiating the return of the Okinawa Islands with Japan, the United States established its policy towards the Diaoyu Islands in China. In order to change the unfavorable international situation, the United States intends to win over China on the Diaoyu Islands issue and hold a "neutral" position on the "sovereignty" of the Diaoyu Islands. In order to safeguard the U.S.-Japan alliance, the United States intends to favor Japan on the Diaoyu Islands issue and return the "regime" of the Diaoyu Islands to Japan. In the process of negotiating the Diaoyu Islands issue with the United States,Japan has been "seeking" the confirmation of the status of the Diaoyu Islands by the United States in an attempt to create the illusion that the Diaoyu Islands belong to Japan. The United States has always refused to talk publicly about the ownership of China’s Diaoyu Islands, but in fact, the United States has long decided that the Diaoyu Islands should belong to the Okinawa Islands and be returned to Japan. As Japan constantly asked the United States to publicly write the Diaoyu Islands into the areas to be returned, the United States finally made concessions to Japan’s request, agreeing to circle the Diaoyu Islands into the Okinawa Islands longitudinally and latitudinally in the "Procedure of Understanding" of the agreement, indirectly supporting the statement that the Diaoyu Islands belong to Japan.Meanwhile, the United States has shifted from supporting Japan’s "residual sovereignty" over the Diaoyu Islands to holding a neutral position on the "sovereignty" of the Diaoyu Islands. It is found that the policy of Diaoyu Island established by the United States in Nixon period seriously damaged our territorial sovereignty and made the contradiction between China and Japan more complicated. However, the U.S.government has thus achieved the goal of maintaining the balance of power in East Asia through the Sino-Japanese Diaoyu Island dispute, which is conducive to the U.S.playing a leading role in East Asia.
