Before Singapore got its independence, ethnic relationship didn’t develop well in Singapore, and some severe conflicts occurred among different ethnic groups.Yet after its independence,Singapore achieved not only excellent economic performance, but also the harmony among different ethnic groups and unity of this country. How did ethnic conflicts occur from time to time before its independence, and then be solved smoothly soon, even the radical ethnic group identity developed into the more inclusive national identity?Through the case of Singapore,we find that hardly do these variables change, such as major ethnic groups, religions, culture, and political environment in Southeast Asia. Therefore, based on the timeline,I use the comparative study on the single case of Singapore.Based on literature review and my own experiences during my 4 months stay in Singapore, the conclusion can be achieved that Singapore government’s ethnic policies, which embody the mainstream construction theories, should be credited to the formation of Singapore’s national identity.
