No matter the Peace of Westphalia or Westphalia system are hot topics in the study of Chinese and foreign scholars in international relations. In this paper,by studying western scholars' literatures on "Westphalia" after the end of the cold war, western scholars' cognition of Westphalia is investigated,so as to understand western scholars' new understanding of "Westphalia" and their grasp of international relations in the post-cold war era. This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter briefly describes the new changes in the international pattern and situation after the end of the cold war,so as to examine the historical background of Westphalia in the western academia. The re-examination of Westphalia by western scholars is closely related to the historical background, especially the change of regional power and the challenge of non-traditional security of transnational nature. The challenge of European integration to national sovereignty cannot be ignored.Even many scholars believe that there is a trend of "sovereignty transfer".The development of countries and regions of Asia,Africa and Latin America also promotes the transformation of the international pattern.Non-traditional security issues of transnational nature represented by terrorism also call into question national sovereignty and the capacity of sovereign states, greatly narrowing the effective scope of the "threat system".The second chapter briefly introduces the development and problems of Westphalia in western literature. The concepts related to Westphalia are developed from the Peace of Westphalia and gradually conceptualized. They are constantly developing in the context of international relations, becoming a system of international relations and forming an academic theoretical research framework. The 1960 s is a key period to promote the conceptualization. At the same time, there are some problems about the use of the term "Westphalia" in western literature. The third chapter focuses on the debate and criticism of the traditional views on the Peace of Westphalia.Traditional views attach great importance to the role of the Peace of Westphalia in the development of the history of international relations, but there is a tendency to criticize traditional views.Chapter four mainly discusses the reflection of western academia on Westphalian system in the new era,and mainly examines the state of Westphalian system in the post-cold war international environment, including the drawbacks of the system itself and the challenges faced by the new international environment.Chapter five mainly discusses the exploration of international governance issues outside the Westphalian system in the western academia. It not only compares the Westphalian system with the Asian system in the same period, but also initially constructs the "Eastphalian" system to describe the changes of the post-cold war international system. The last part is the general survey of the reflection on Westphalia in the post-cold war era.
