Ronald Inglehart presided over the "world values survey" project as a famous political scientist of American. He was the first scholar who put forward the concept of "cultural Renaissance".Ingelhart revised the traditional secularization theory on the basis of Max Weber and reflate the "clash of civilizations" theory of Huntington. Then put forward the revised version of secularization. Finally put emphasis on the role of the secularization to democracy. Both of the secularization and democracy are the phenomenon in the process of modernization.Inglehart said that modernization can be divided into two stages:the first phase is the shift from traditional authority to secular-rational authority;the second phase shift from survival values to self-expression values. The process of secularization belongs to the first stage, thus promote the development of the second phase, and further promote democratic political process. The revised version of secularization by Inglehart has two hypothesis:first, human security is different in different countries.Second, the societies difference in religious discussion.Through the world values survey, inglehart, found that the the"calsh of civilizations" is wrong. Both Islamic and Western countries aresimilar to the ideal of democracy. However, the reason why they have a gap on democracy is that:the level of human security is low in agricultural and developing countries.People feel unsafe and need an authority leader or government which not good for formative the culture of democracy.Meanwhile, the advanced post-industrial countries has a higher level of human security and income.Leading the demand for god and authority goes down.People shift value from the traditional religious value to secular-rational value.People abandon the authority and the bondage of traditional religious values, the rational rose, pursuit freedom, advocate gender equality, break through the limitation of the traditional religious parties, gave rise to the generation the new political parties, diversified competition, public participation in politics. All of these promote the further development of democracy. |
