| As a coastal region in eastern China with a strong economy,Jiangsu Province is committed to developing its various areas such as tourism, agriculture and education.Meanwhile, its communication with other parts of the world has become increasingly close. In order to present Jiangsu Province to the outside world in an all-round way,the Local Annals Editorial Committee of Jiangsu Province has started to compile the English edition of Jiangsu Province Yearbook since 2012.As a type of informative text,Jiangsu Province Yearbook is a material reference book published annually that systematically records the data of Jiangsu’s natural resources, politics, economy, culture and education, etc. Its English version is significant not only for Jiangsu to attract more foreign investment to promote better and faster development, but also for foreigners to learn and experience its cultural charm. The project report is based on the author’s practical experience in translating into English Chapter 9 Agriculture and the latter part of Chapter 15 Education of Jiangsu Province Yearbook 2018.In this report, the author first describes the difficulties encountered in the process of translation and identifies the causes for them at different levels. At the lexical level, the difficulties mainly include the translation of terminology,four-character constructions and numeral abbreviations. At the syntactical level, they involve the handling of null-subject sentences and long sentences.Such difficulties are mainly due to the translator’s lack of adequate professional knowledge concerning the fields of agriculture and education and insufficient understanding of the differences between Chinese and English.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory, the author proposes corresponding solutions to solve the problems she has encountered, hoping to provide some reference for the translation of such informative texts as the yearbook. |
