Public signs are an indispensable part of urban construction, the embodiment of a city's foreign exchange level and cultural taste, and the name card for a city to show its charm to the outside world. Therefore, the translation of public signs also plays a very important role in urban construction. With the deepening of China's Reform and Opening-up policy, the level of urbanization in China has been significantly improved, the comprehensive strength of cities has been continuously enhanced and many cities have ushered in internationalization. Many scholars have begun to pay attention to and study the translation of urban public signs, which has greatly improved the translation of urban public signs in many cities. However, there is still a long way to go between this improvement and the urbanization in China today. The English translation of public signs in many cities is still full of mistakes, which seriously affects the image of cities. Therefore, the study of translation of urban public signs is still of great practical significance and should be taken seriously. The thesis here studies the English translation of urban public signs in Guangdong. In the empirical study, the author analyzes and studies the main problems in the translation of urban public signs in Guangdong Province from the perspective of Relevance Theory, which are mainly manifested in two aspects: Language(spelling errors, grammatical errors and lexical errors)and Pragmatics(pragmatic language failure and social pragmatic failure). The author adopts the method of field visits and online questionnaires to understand the current situation of the translation of urban public signs in Guangdong and reads a large number of articles on the translation of public signs, tries to find the corresponding strategies to solve the problems, including the three principles that urban public signs should follow under the guidance of Relevance Theory, the flexible use of various translation methods, efforts from the government supervision and the construction of the translation team in order to maximize the standardization of urban public signs in Guangdong. On one hand, the purpose of this study is to arouse the attention of government departments at all levels and those who participate in the translation of public signs. On the other hand,it is also to make its own contribution to further standardize the translation of urban public signs in Guangdong.
