A Project Report Of Interpretation For One Health Conference

One Health Conference has been hosted twice a year at the University of California,Davis(UCD)since 2015 by Western Institution of Food Safety and Security(WIFSS)— an institution for education and training home and abroad that is subordinate to UCD,and has cooperated with major agricultural universities as well as institutions in China to focus on and improve the health of human beings,animals,and the environment.The reporter served as one of the interpreters for the 2019 Summer One Health Conference,providing interpretation services for UC Davis professors and Chinese participants.This report describes the difficulties and problems encountered in the project process in detail,and puts forward feasible solutions in combination with existing studies on consecutive interpreting at home and abroad.During the nearly one-month meeting,the reporter had been faced with difficulties mainly due to lack of professional knowledge,inability to take notes in some cases,inadequate proficiency for handling complex sentences,lack of knowledge about Chinese traditional culture,and physical as well as psychological pressure.After reflection and summary,the proposed solutions are as follows: sufficient preparation before the project,adequate professional knowledge;utilization of supplementary interpretation;improvement of short-term memory;practice of sight interpretation;asking the speaker for help if necessary;enhancement of cultural literacy including the understanding about history and culture of various countries;strong physical fitness and mental quality.
