Abstract/Summary:
The translation report,based on the Finance Companies Act of the Republic of Singapore,focuses on the Chinese translation of legal terms in the Singaporean law.The Singapore financial market is one of the most important international markets globally.Financial and legal risks cannot be avoided in the process of cooperation between China and Singapore under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.Promoting the construction of the BRI requires government and investors to abide by the rules of the countries along the Road.Therefore,legal translation and study play an important role.Legal translation is associated with the study on legal terms at its core.They are professional and standardized.It occurs that the same term produces different concepts in different legal systems.Singapore is under the common law system while China is under the socialist legal system with Chinese characteristics.The same legal term has different meanings in the two countries.Therefore,one of the difficulties in the translation of legal terms is how to understand legal terms and find the legal functional equivalence.When translating legal terms from English to Chinese,translators should analyze both lexical meaning and legal significance and make endeavor to find equivalent words in Chinese or in some cases find solutions to compensate incongruency.This report sets out to present how to verify legal terms during translation process and choose proper equivalent words from the perspective of legal functional equivalence.It resorts to parallel texts,online database,comparative law and system to clarify how to ascertain Chinese translation and compensate the incongruity of terms.It is committed to analyzing translation strategies and providing an accurate translation.The findings are designed to provide some humble opinions for the translation of legal terms in the foreign laws and regulations.This report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter briefly introduces the background and objectives of the translation project,and summarizes the characteristics of the selected translation text.The second chapter includes elaboration of research materials,research objects and research methods.The third chapter involves case study.It selects cases involving legal terms for analysis and comparative research,and discusses translation strategies from the perspective of legal function equivalence.The fourth chapter offers translation methods based on the case study.The biggest challenge in the Chinese translation of legal terms lies in the choice of words.How to find equivalent words at the legal level is the primary research task.In this process,it easily encounters incongruency in legal terms and this chapter concludes solutions.Chapter five summarizes the whole report.
