In the pre Qin period,"Designation" and "Etiquette" were closely related.Confucius' thought of rectifying the name originates from the deep understanding of the relationship between "designation" and "etiquette".The full text is divided into three chapters: the cultural origin,the background of the times and the practice of Confucius' name rectificationIn the first chapter,"Designation" and the rites and music system of Zhou Dynasty.This chapter discusses the infiltration of "Designation" into politics and ethics in the process of the construction of ritual system in Zhou Dynasty.In the process of the construction of the ritual and music system of the Zhou Dynasty,the people of Zhou Dynasty divided the sacrificial hierarchy,political superiority and inferiority,and patriarchal clan relations through the "Designation".Rites and music are not only a kind of institutional arrangement,but also an important way to educate people in ethics.Zhou people controlled the desire of people of different classes for political power and social wealth with "Rites",interpreted music theory with the political and ethical significance of "Designation",so that "music" and social ethics can be connected,and the harmony of temperament shown by "music" can dispel people's inner resentment.The second chapter is the background of Confucius' thought of rectifying the name.This chapter discusses that since the late Western Zhou Dynasty,with the loss of the political authority of the king of Zhou,the princes and the ministers and bureaucrats stepped on the historical and political stage,which led to the gradual collapse of the hierarchical order of rites and music.In the era of Confucius,not only the political authority of the king of Zhou was completely lost,but also the rites and music systems of the princes were also in existence.In the state of Lu and the state of Wei,the ritual and music systems were not in conformity with the reality.Confucius saw the negative impact of the destruction of "Designation" and ritual system on social politics and ethics from two aspects of history and reality,and proposed to restore social governance by "rectifying the name".The third chapter is the content and practice of Confucius' thought of rectifying the name.This chapter discusses the content of Confucius' thought of rectifying the name and Confucius' personal efforts in politics and culture in order to realize the former king's policy.Confucius took "benevolence" as the core of human ethical and moral spirit,making "gentleman" the common value pursuit of society.Politically,in order to govern the society,Confucius made great effortsto restore the social ethical order in strict accordance with the requirements of the Zhou rites when he was "dominating the city of Lu","meeting at Jiagu" and "falling into three capitals";culturally,Confucius took "The Book of Songs" and "The Book of Rites" as the most important task in his study and self-cultivation.He used "Shang Shu" to guide political affairs,"The Book of Music" to make people peaceful,and "The Book of Changes" to the Cosmos' rule.The "orthodoxy" of the sage king's way is carried in the spring and Autumn Annals.
