The concept of thinking exists in many different subjects,which has different definitions in philosophy,psychology,neuroscience,sociology and so on.The quality of thinking refers to the ability and level of thinking in logic,criticism,innovation and so on.The latest curriculum reform in China attaches special importance to the cultivation of students' thinking traits,and the latest High School English Curriculum Standard(2017)put forward that the thinking quality embodies the mental characteristics of the core competence of English subjects.The development of thinking traits is conducive to improving students' ability to analyze and solve problems,so that they can observe and understand the world from a cross-cultural perspective and make correct value judgments about things.Scholars home and abroad have done a lot of research on the relationship between language and thinking,and formed different schools at different stages.The common view of these scholars is that there is an inseparable relationship between language learning and thinking.But on the whole,so far it has shown the phenomenon of stripping and fragmentation.The design of problems in English reading teaching is not aimed at thinking training but shaped mostly subjectively.The training for reading is only a simple repetition of a certain type of question with no thought process.As a result,students' thinking and thinking traits haven't been improved.Then,there is no guarantee of improving students' reading ability.Therefore,it is necessary to increase the integration of English reading teaching and thinking traits training,and to ensure that English reading teaching cultivates and improves students' thinking traits.In view of the difficulty in reading caused by the lack of English thinking among middle school students,this study takes discourse analysis theory and schema theory as the theoretical basis to explore the cultivation of students' thinking traits in high school English reading teaching.With the help of language schema(linguistic schemata),content schema(content schemata)and rhetorical schema(rhetorical schemata)or formal schema(formal schemata),this thesis explores effective measures to cultivate students' thinking traits from the aspects of logicality,criticalness and creativity.The research subjects of the research are students from two parallel classes of Dagang High School of Jiangsu Province 2019.I carry out the experiment in these two classes for three months through testing,comparison and interviews to understand the students' development inthinking traits and reading level,so as to test whether the cultivation of thinking traits can promote the improvement of students' reading level.This research focuses on the following questions:(1)What English reading teaching activities can be designed to improve students' thinking trait?(2)What is the impact of cultivating students' thinking trait on students' reading level?Through the research,test,questionnaire,interview and analysis,it is found that in the experimental teaching English reading based on schema theory and discourse analysis theory to cultivate students' thinking traits,activities like brainstorming,appreciating language materials,predicting,comparing summarizing and creating by writing passages and designing such products as posters and websites have helped the students understand the language schema,content schema and formal schema.In this course,the logicality,criticalness and creativity of students' thinking quality have been improved obviously.Besides,students' reading abilities in terms of the following aspects have also been obviously improved:(1)getting detailed information;(2)dealing with inferring,judging and transforming;(3)generalizing the main idea and writing purpose;(4)abstracting and creating.In the meantime,the students have developed and improved the sense of cooperating-discussing-questioning-discussing-abstractinggeneralizing.And the improved thinking traits in turn improve the students' reading ability.
