With the rise of China's status in the world, the communication between China and other countries comes into a new period. Many historical documents in foreign countries have been translated and introduced into China. However,in BooksChina.com and other online bookstores, only two translations about Irish history can be found, and no special translations about the revolution in Ireland are on sale.In August,2018,the translator was entrusted to translate a book The Revolution in Ireland,1879-1923 by the Barton Ivan Advertising Culture Communication Co.,Ltd in Xi'an,Shaanxi province. The entrusting party indicates that no Chinese translation of this book has been published. Therefore, the translation practice of this book is of much significance. This report is based on the English-Chinese translation practice of chapters five and eight of The Revolution in Ireland,1879-1923.This report introduces the whole process of the translation of chapters five and eight of the book in detail, including introduction, task description, the description of translation process, case analysis of the difficulties and solutions,as well as a summary of the translation practice. In the first chapter of this report, the significance of the translation practice is analysed, and the structure of this report is introduced. The second chapter makes a description of the translation task, introduces the requirements from the entrusting party, and shows an analysis about the features of the words and sentences in the source text. The third chapter describes the preparations of background information, translation tools, parallel texts, guiding theory—Peter Newmark's text typology according to which the source text is informative, and translation method—communicative translation;the processes of formulating the translation plan, making glossaries, and achieving the quality control;and the evaluations from the translator, the peers and the entrusting party. The fourth chapter focuses on the difficulties in translation on lexical level, syntactic level, and textual level in cases analyses and describes the process of solving the difficulties by using the method of communicative translation. The last chapter makes a summary of the experience and knowledge acquired in the translation practice, lists the unsolved problems, and analyses the implication of the translation practice. The conclusion of the report focuses on four aspects.First, the translator observes the requirements from the entrusting party rigidly to finish the translation task successfully.Second, the translator annotates the proper nouns by using the footnotes in the translation of historical documents,to make the target text easy understanding and readable for the readers. What's more,in the perspective of communicative translation, the long sentences in the source text are divided or reconstructed to make the translations of the historical events idiomatic and smooth, while the cohesion and coherence of the target text are concerned. The last, referring to the parallel texts and background information, the accuracy of the translation of the historical events is kept, and the information in the source text is transmitted into the target text properly.
