| This paper is a practice report on the English-Chinese translation of Iran’s Foreign and Defense Policies published by the Congress Research Service,which describes Iran’s national defense and foreign policies with detailed data.The source text of this translation project is the first four chapters of Iran’s Foreign and Defense Policies.The source text elaborates the introduction to Iran’s foreign policy and national defense policy,the driving factors of Iran’s policy,Iran’s national security strategic instrument,Iran’s nuclear program and national defense.The source text of this translation project is a political text.From the aspect of content,this text is highly specialized and involves a wide range of professional knowledge,which requires for the abundant knowledge reserve of translators;from the perspective of vocabulary and syntax,this text contains many professional terms,rigorous and formal words,complex and diverse sentence patterns,which bring great challenge to its translation.The translation of information texts,especially political texts,requires a high degree of faithfulness and readability.To achieve the above two goals at the same time is the difficulty of this translation project.―Faithfulness‖ requires translators to accurately convey the message in the source text;―Readability‖ requires translators to present the translated text in an acceptable way for Chinese readers.To solve the difficult problems in this translation project,and to achieve ―faithfulness‖ and ―readability‖,the translator selects Nord‘s Text Analysis Model and the Function Plus Loyalty principle for the theoretic guidance of its translation.The problems in vocabulary,syntax and content are solved by using such translation methods as literal translation,addition,conversion,word order adjustment and others.Owing to the inherent differences in thinking and culture between Chinese and English,it is unrealistic to realize both "function" and "loyalty" in some cases.In this case,the translators are supposed to choose between the two according to the translation purposes."Function" and "loyalty" are not completely opposite,so translators should try their best to achieve them together through various translation strategies and methods.When necessary,they should make some choices and give priority to one over the other.In the translating of the informative text,the translator found that the top priority should be given to the delivery of the original author‘s intention in the translation of an informative text so that the functional equivalence and the communicative purpose can be achieved.To be specific,on the one hand,the translator should ensure the accuracy of the translated text,so as to ensure that the information is conveyed without omission or distortion.On the other hand,by taking both readers‘ acceptance and understanding,and the differences between Chinese and English into consideration,the translator should make sure that the translated text conforms to the expression habits of Chinese and can be easily understood. |
