Xu Fancheng is a great thinker in modern times.He has the reputation of "modern Xuanzang".His academic achievements are outstanding,especially his contribution to the translation and introduction of Indian ideology and culture in China.Under the special social and cultural background of modern times,Xu Fancheng accepted the ideas of philosophy from India.In the blend of different civilizations,Xu Fancheng formed his unique view of India,and the image of India in his works is the most direct embodiment.As "bystander","seeker" and "preacher",Xu Fancheng's image of India in his works of different periods is not only the reflection of his view of India,but also his reflection on Chinese culture in different stages.It is of great historical and practical significance to study the image of India in Xu Fancheng's works.This paper divides Xu Fancheng's translation career into three stages,and analyzes the Indian images in the representative translations of each stage,and probes into the characteristics of the Indian images in his works and the development of his Indian outlook.In his youth,Xu Fancheng mainly interpreted and interpreted Indian philology and Hindu books from the perspective of bystanders.At this stage,Xu Fancheng's starting point in shaping the image of India was his aspiration to "reform nationality",so the focus was on the translation of "ideology".The image of India in Xu Fancheng's writings at this stage mainly focused on the "new assessment of national values."The second phase of Xu Fancheng's career as a translator was at Aurobindo College,during which Xu Fancheng shaped his image of India as a seeker.This period of translation is no longer "for the world" as the goal,but the vision of the future of the Chinese nation.The image of India is also a starting point,more in the road of modern development of India as a guide for China,the value of the lessons.When Xu Fancheng returned to China in his later years,the images of India in his translations were mainly created from the perspective of Chinese Cultural Evangelists.The academic monograph "Lu Wang Xue Shu" and the collection of essays "classical review" are the representative works of this period.The first is to explore the new value of neo-confucianism in the song and Ming Dynasties and to reshape the national cultural self-confidence.The second is to rethink the Indian culture,the analysis of the ancient civilization to explore the common way of progress in the future.Finally,on the basis of summarizing the objectivity and comprehensiveness of Xu Fancheng's image of India,the significance of studying the image of India in Xu Fancheng's works is discussed.The first is the significance of the historical context,mainly focusing on Xu Fancheng's acceptance of India in the context of modern society and culture,taking the image of India created by Jin Kemu,Zhang Binglin and others as a reference to see the uniqueness of Xu Fancheng's image of India.The second is the significance in the realistic context,which mainly focuses on the contemporary value of the image of India in Xu Fancheng's works and the enlightenment of the academic vision and academic concept to today's scholars.
