A Report On The C-E Translation Of Encyclopedia Of China's Geographical Indication Products(Excerpts)from The Perspective Of Thick Translation

The report is based on the Chinese to English translation of the Sichuan volumes excerpted from the Encyclopedia of China's Geographical Indication Products to meet the output demands of Chinese cultural translation,aiming to tell the world China's stories and get China's voice out.The report includes four chapters.First,it mainly states the report's background,significance and structure;second,it elaborates on the three stages of translation process;third,it analyzes translated texts from the perspective of visible and invisible thick translation;finally,the author puts forward some research findings and limitations of the report.In pre-translation preparation,with the help of network resources and paper books,the author searches for relevant parallel texts and works out a task schedule;during translation process,the author takes theory of “analysis,transfer and restructuring” as guidance to direct translation;in post-translation revisions,through ways of self-check,peer review and further proofreading,translation quality is improved a lot.With great charm,the Encyclopedia boasts distinguished characteristics of Chinese culture,which causes great challenge for translation.In order to better present the cultural information of source texts,the author adopts “thick translation”,which consists of visible thick translation and invisible thick translation,as the main translation strategy to place texts in a rich cultural and linguistic environment.Usually,visible thick translation includes methods of footnotes,appendix and illustrations,which provides profound information of source texts for target readers,but increases reading burden at the same time;invisible thick translation takes additions,paraphrase and annotations as specific methods to keep translation fluent.Both visible and invisible thick translation have advantages;they coordinate with each other,perfectly promoting the integration of text's obscured meanings with translator's intention.
