Social exclusion is a broad and diverse social phenomenon, specifically,it refers to the phenomenon in which an individual is rejected or devalued by others or groups in social communication, and the social needs he desires cannot be realized.According to the immediacy and indirectness of exclusion,it can be divided into rejection and neglect, different forms of exclusion have different effects on individual self-focus.However,studies have found that different types of exclusion have different effects on individuals under different contextual communication norms.Nowadays, researches on the types of exclusion are mostly based on the subjects in the western communicative background, and they are more of a direct communication mode(low-context communication norm). There are few studies on different contexts(high-context or low-context communication norms),the effect of exclusion type on individual self-focus.In today's society, the communication between east and west is increasingly frequent. In this process, the phenomenon of social exclusion in cross-context communication is increasing,It's important to understand the psychological mechanisms,Therefore, this study explored the influence of different types of exclusion on individuals' self-focus by initiating their communication norms in different contexts.Study 1 focuses on the explicit self-focus of individuals after they are rejected or ignored in the context of different communication norms. We recruited 123 middle school students in central China to activate their high-context or low-context communication norms, and manipulated the subjects' sense of rejection or neglect through recall paradigm. Finally, the Self-Focused Attention Scale was used to measure the explicit self-focus of the subjects. The results show that in the high-context communication norm, individuals who are rejected show higher explicit self-focus than those who are ignored. In the low-context communication norm, individuals who suffer from the neglect show higher explicit self-focus than those who suffer from the rejection.Study 2 is a supplement to Study 1,focusing on the implicit self-focus of individuals after being rejected or ignored in the context of different contextual communication norms.Recruit 131 high school students in central China, activate theirhigh-context or low-context communication norm, and manipulate the subjects' sense of rejection or neglect through recall paradigm. Finally, the implicit self-focus of the subjects was measured by the sentence supplement task. The results show that in the high-context communication norm, individuals who are rejected show higher implicit self-focus than those who are ignored. In the low-context communication norm, individuals who are ignored show higher implicit self-focus than those who are rejected.Current study shows that the self-focused response of individuals to exclusion is influenced by both the form of exclusion and the norm of contextual communication.Specifically, individuals who are rejected in high context show higher explicit and implicit self-focus than those who are ignored.Being ignored in low context shows higher explicit and implicit self-focus than being rejected.
