The Echo Maker is one of the masterpieces of American “X generation” novelist--Richard Powers.The novel won the National Book Award in 2006.In the novel,Powers described the fate of the crane—as a representative of nature,and further revealed the environmental crisis caused by man's exploitation of nature,which can urge human beings to reflect on their relationship with nature and enhance their ecology consciences.In the novel,Powers cited Leopold's land ethics thoughts many times,integrating ecology-centered ecological thinking into the story ingeniously.Finally,Powers puts forward the criterion of the relationship between human and nature and the necessity of establishing Ecological Consciences.This thesis discusses the ecological ethics thoughts in the novel based on Leopold's land ethic thoughts and ecology consciences.The thesis tends to inspire people to rethink the relationship between human beings and natural ecology,and make people realize that blindly insisting on anthropologist are doomed to lead to the discord between man and nature.The construction of Ecological Consciences is an important ecological strategy to achieve sustainable development and to achieve harmonious coexistence between man and nature.The thesis is divided into five chapters.The first chapter introduces the author,Richard Powers and his masterpiece The Echo Maker,and reviews its recent research at home and abroad.The second chapter illustrates the main thoughts of Leopold's Land Ethics.The third chapter points out that the relationship between man and nature has become inharmonious on account of the violation of the land ethics.There is a crack in the relationship among man,nature and land.The fourth chapter discusses that the relationship of harmony and co-existence between man and nature requires the reconstruction of human Ecological Consciences,and the co-prosperity between human and land needs the cultivation of Land Affection.In chapter five,the thesis concludes that the reconstruction of Ecological Consciences and the reunification of man and nature are the trends of future human society and the ultimate goal of sustainable development.
