A Report On The E-C Translation Of Caravans: Indian Merchants On The Silk Road (Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Cohesion Theory

The silk road is a famous ancient land trade route which connects Asia and Europe,and promotes the exchange and development of eastern and western civilizations.Therefore,it is of great significance for Chinese scholars to study the caravan history along the silk road.This report is about the E-C translation of three chapters taken from Scott.C.Levi's book entitled Caravans: Indian Merchants on the Silk Road which mainly introduces the development of Indian Caravans along the silk road,the trade of Indian textiles and the rise of slavery in India.Besides,this book probes into the impact of Indian caravans in fields of the economy,politics,history,culture and other aspects on the countries along the silk road.As linguistics is developing,more and more people realize that cohesion theory plays an important role in discourse structure.The key to translating process lies in dealing with cohesion devices because it directly affects the quality and readability of the translation text.Based on the practice,the translator analyzes the source text under the guidance of cohesion theory put forward by Halliday and Hasan.The translator summarizes some specific methods,including lexical repetition,omission,addition and conversion of the original cohesive items to deal with the cohesion devices which include referential cohesion,structural cohesion and conjunction.Though different methods are offered and employed on case-by-case analysis,they generally follow three major strategies: 1)to keep the cohesion devices;2)to omit the cohesion devices;3)to adjust the cohesion devices.
