This thesis aims to explore syntactic linearity in text-based simultaneous interpreting from English into Chinese, with specific attention given to the tactics of segmentation, addition, conversion of part of speech.Gile's Effort Models are used to explain the necessity of syntactic linearity in E-C simultaneous interpreting with text. The author analyzed her simultaneous interpreting performance at the mock conference of UN-Habitat Assembly during her internship at the United Nations Office at Nairobi(UNON),Kenya. The conference was organized by interpreting trainers from the Chinese booth and attended by eleven speakers,a majority of whom are UN interpreters. It lasted for one hour and a half, during which the author and her boothmate were responsible for providing simultaneous interpreting between English and Chinese. In case analysis, the author selected the interpretation of five speeches made by representatives from Azerbaijan,Czech Republic, the UK,the USA and UN-Habitat and analysed the application of syntactic linearity, the accumulated time of which is 29 minutes.Beisdes, the author pointed out problems arising from inappropriate application and the speaker factor and explored possible solutions and preventive tactics to those problems.
