The Translation Of Cohesive Devices In The Coddling Of The American Mind

A text is a group of sentences with relevance,which lies in the tangible network of the text(cohesion)and the invisible network of the text(coherence).Cohesion refers to the formal connection of a text through grammatical or lexical cohesion.English and Chinese have different cohesive devices.Translators should pay attention to the translation of cohesive devices,so that the translation can accurately and clearly convey the meaning of the original text,and the cohesive devices used in the translation conform to the expression habits of the target language.Based on the cohesion theory of Halliday and Hasan,this report uses case analysis to analyze The Coddling of The American Mind from the perspective of cohesive devices,including referential cohesion,substitution,ellipsis,conjunction and lexical cohesion.Through translation practice and analysis,the author is more aware of the following.On the one hand,translators should be aware of the differences in cohesive devices between the source language and target language.In translation,the cohesive devices of the source language can be retained,omitted,or the referential words can be reproduced.On the other hand,English pays attention to the richness of expression,with more use of referential cohesion,substitution,ellipsis and lexical cohesion;while Chinese emphasizes repetition,with more use of the same noun,that is why when we translate English into Chinese,we often repeat the referential words.The first chapter is the task description,including task background and task significance.The second chapter is the task process,which introduces pre-translation preparation,translation process and post-translation modification.The third chapter is an overview of the theory,which includes the overview of the cohesion theory,and the application of cohesion theory in English-Chinese translation.The fourth chapter is case analysis,whichanalyzes ways to translate the five cohesive devices with specific examples.And the fifth chapter is the conclusion.
