Metaphor serves as an important media in the dissemination of foreign policy norms, such a technique of expression can be swiftly adopted to demonstrate national policies and their positions and avoid unnecessary conflict. Therefore, metaphorical construction of diplomatic policy has become one of the main forms in inter-state dialogue. The informative source text of this translation report is derived from Foreign Policy by Metaphor by Paul Chilton and George Lakoff, which was published in a collection of essays(first paper of the second part)named Language &Peace in 1999.That paper regarded metaphor, which is ubiquitous in the construction of international relations and the formulating of foreign policy,as a mean to cognize the world. Some related issues of metaphorization were also introduced in this report, which provides sound literature for comprehensively understanding the metaphor in the related field of foreign affairs. To achieve a better version, the author of this report went through some literature during the process of translation.Besides, under the guidance of “Political Equivalence” theory, certain translation methods and techniques were also adopted to cope with encountered difficulties concerning vocabulary, sentences and texts, etc. The report is hereby written according to above-mentioned analyses and related summaries. The report consists of five chapters. The author briefly introduces the translation project in the first chapter, which specifically involves origin, characteristics and research value of source text. The second chapter provides theoretical guidance named “Political Equivalence” for this project. And The third chapter is developed with a description of the concrete translating process. The fourth chapter can be regarded as the core of this report,it focuses on encountered difficulties concerning vocabulary, syntax and text, methods and techniques adopted in the process of translation, and some analyses are also made based on related translation cases. Some accumulated insights acquired from the translation experience are summarized in the fifth part, which proposes an outline for potential researches in the near future.By focusing on several translation issues concerning political metaphors in thisreport, the author endeavours to present the characteristics of the western countries in the expression of foreign policy. It also tries to make domestic scholars aware of the impact of metaphorical foreign policy construction and consequently promotes domestic researches in related fields.
