A Report On E-C Translation Of Life Along The Silk Road From The Perspective Of The Hermeneutic Translation Theory

Since President Xi Jinping put forward the Belt and Road initiative,cultural and academic exchanges between China and countries along the Silk Road have been increasingly deepened and people from all walks of life worldwide have been paying more attention to the Silk Road.Volumes of works written about the Silk Road have been published.One of them was the second edition of Life along the Silk Road,a collection of tales,that had happened on the Silk Road hundreds of years ago.This thesis reports the Hermeneutic Motion guided translation of the introduction,the shipmaster's tale,the writer's tale and the pilgrim's tale of the book.This book is a type of documentary novel whose texts are essentially informative and expressive,a style that requires the translation to be aimed at objective delivery of historical information and vivid expression of the author's sentiment.The implications provided by the fourfold motions defined by Steiner's hermeneutic translation theory,namely “trust”,“aggression”,“import” and“compensation”,on the current translation practice of this book were discussed with examples illustrating how different translation strategies and techniques were used to convert the source text into accurate and vivid Chinese text.In the end,gains,understandings and problems summarized as for the translation of the similar types of texts.
