| The present study conducts a Critical Discourse Analysis(hereafter CDA)to disclose the relationship among discourse,ideology,society and rights.All the 73 news reports on the Belt and Road Initiative(hereafter the BRI))collected as corpus were from 8mainstream media in the USA.Using UAM Corpus Tool as the marking tool,the present study,combining qualitative research and quantitative research,studies the corpus from three levels: text,discourse practice and socio-cultural practice based on the integrated analytical framework of Fairclough's Three-dimensional Model and Martin's Appraisal Resources.Through the analysis of the distribution and frequency of the appraisal resources and intertexuality,we can explore the ideology,attitudes and positions conveyed by news reports,thus the research questions are answered:How the mainstream media realize the image construction of the BRI by adopting certain linguistic strategies and what image of the BRI is constructed.Then the present study will probe into the socio-cultural reasons of the image construction from the perspectives of economy,politics and culture.Through careful analysis,the results show that 1)Judgment resources are most frequently adopted,while the amounts of affect resources and appreciation resources are similar.The majority of the attitude resources are positive.2)Heteroglossic resources outnumber monoglossic resources and dialogic expansion resources account for the largest proportion.3)Under graduation sub-system,force resources are preferred compared to focus resources and quantification resources occupy the largest proportion.4)The amount of direct speeches slightly exceeds that of indirect speeches and they are adopted to convey different viewpoints.5)Specified news resources are most frequently used while the minority are from ordinary people.Through the skillful adoption of appraisal resources and intertexuality strategies,the news reports acknowledged the scale and the potential value of the BRI.However,they also constructed the image of the BRI as a greedy and beggar-thy-neighborpolicy adopted to serve its conspiracy of realizing hegemony and breaking the world political and economic balances at the cost of the interests of other countries.Given the analysis results,this study,on the one hand,provides references for China to correctly interpret the appraisal of the USA of the BRI and further sheds light on the future publicity of the BRI.On the other hand,this study enriches the application of CDA and provides new perspective for future studies of the BRI. |
