This report is on the English-Chinese translation of A Companion to the History of the Book(Part I).The research method of case study is used in this book to illustrate the history of book in great detail. And the first part is “Methods and Approaches” which mainly introduces the methods used by book historians in the study of book history. The book is a social science text covered bibliology, which is featured by technical expressions, careful word arrangement and abundant logical arguments. The translator encountered a number of difficulties in the process of translation, and the translation of logical connections is the most significant one.By employing adaptation theory, the translator attempts to solve the problem in two ways, the use of logical connectives and how to use them in the translation.Under the guidance of adaptation theory, the translator constructs the mode and process of translation practice, which requires the translator to adapt the habits of expression, capacity of comprehension and thinking pattern of the target readers on the basis of a good grasp of logic in the original text so as to choose appropriate translation. Then the translator explores the common translation methods of logical connection in the social science text from three aspects: the implicitation of explicit logical connection, the explicitation of implicit logical connection and the adjustment of explicit logical connection. Finally, the translator concludes that adaptive translation is effective for target readers to avoid the thinking resistance caused by logical confusion of the translation to some extent by using the translation methods of omission, replacement by punctuation marks, amplification, conversion of part of speech and adjustment of word order appropriately.
