The translation of art history text helps to popularize the relevant knowledge of western art history and to promote the art cultivation and aesthetic ability of the public. At present, there are relatively few Literary works of art in China, what's more, almost no series has been formed. The translation of art history text has a long way to go.This report, taking Greek Art,the first chapter in the first part of Clarence Cook's Outlines of the History of Art,as an example,Under the guidance of Peter Newmark's text type division principle and his semantic translation and communicative translation theory, summarizes the problems encountered in translation, discusses the translation methods of such texts, and explores the corresponding compensation measures for the phenomenon of cultural default in translation.According to Newmark's division principle of text types, art history text has both the characteristics of informative texts and those of expressive texts.Guided by this theory, the author conducts translation practice and case study. This report firstly analyzes the characteristics of the source text from three aspects: text type, syntactic features and lexical features.Secondly, this thesis analyzes three dimensions of vocabulary, sentence,as well as default and compensation.Under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation theory,it discusses the translation methods and techniques of terminology, foreign words, architectural vocabulary, and long sentences, declarative sentences and passive sentences.Through the three methods of intratextual interpretation, footnote and domestication, the cultural default in translation can be compensated. It is hoped that this practical report can provide a reference for the translation of art history text, thereby improving the quality of translation.
