Although High School Entrance Examination(abbreviated as HSEE)is a regional test, the level of difficulty is still high.Reading comprehension is a key and difficult point of English test, and this is why teachers focus on this part mostly in daily English teaching. However, reading class is still full of problems because the traditional grammartranslation method is often used to teach students. As a result, students' reading ability cannot be effectively improved in such a teaching environment.Adverbial Conjunctions(abbreviated as ACs)refer to words which appear in English complex sentences or texts. Many foreign scholars Halliday,Quirk and domestic scholars like Yuanren Chao,Yuan Surong and others have done a lot of researches on this topic. They think that ACs can not only express a logical semantic relationship in a discourse, but help link a good context structure, which makes students grasp the gist of discourse better.According to the questionnaires and interviews, most students don't know what ACs are without the guidance at the beginning. However, after a two-month experiment, many students can have a basic understanding of ACs,and can apply them to do English reading comprehension. As a result, the speed of doing English comprehension is much faster. Therefore, this thesis aims to help students to understand related background, judgement standards and classification of ACs.The author takes examples of nearly 10-year-English tests of Taizhou to investigate and analyze the frequency and distribution of ACs.Related results are as follows: 1)The frequency and distribution of ACs in English reading are increasing;2)In terms of distribution, the occurrence of ACs in passage C and D is relatively high.3)ACs can help students accelerate their reading speed and improve their reading efficiency. In the end,the author puts forward some effective teaching suggestions for students, teachers and test designers. In addition, the author also comes up with some limitations for the thesis, hoping that this kind of words can be widely used in English reading teaching.
