This is an English-Chinese translation report.The source text of the translation practice is a Roman historical novel titled Emperor: The Death of Kings(Chapters 4-6),written by Conn Iggulden who is a famous British fiction author.His masterpiece Emperor(the "Emperor of Rome")is a book series which include four parts.My translation project is from the second novel called The Death of Kings.The source text consists of 2 parts which are 43 chapters in total,and the selected chapters are the Chapters 4-6.This fiction describes the legendary life of the emperor Caesar.In the process of translating,there are so many problems about the Roman history,culture and languages,among which,the lexical difficulties contain the translation of proper nouns and culture-loaded words;and the syntactic difficulties contain the translation of sentences with attributive clauses and the compound and complex sentences;and lastly,the discourse level includes the difficulties about cohesion and coherence aspects and how to deal with the dialogue translation.In the process of translation,the translator spent much time on solving the problems at the lexical level,the syntactic level and the discourse level.Eventually,most of the difficulties encountered before were solved with the corresponding methods and strategies.Through this translation task,the translator gained a lot.On the one hand,the translator not only learned much information about Roman history and culture,but also learned how to translate fictional text with professional translation methods and techniques.Moreover,as a student majoring in English translation,this experience improves the translator’s English-Chinese translation ability and strengthens the ability of understanding and expressing foreign language in Chinese as well.
