The New Culture Movement is a historical turning point in modern Chinese history that makes it so important, therefore, the number of research on New Culture Movement has been tremendous.Yet,the spreading of New Culture Movement out of Mainland China is a subject that rarely discussed by researchers, hence, this research focuses on Singapore of Nanyang, which takes the supplement of Lat Pau—a major Chinese newspaper in Singapore—as research material,to explore the export and response between the New Culture Movement and the Chinese society of Singapore in 1922-1923.Chapter 1 is an introduction to the three fundamental elements for the spreading of the New Culture Movement, which are the Chinese society of Singapore(receiver),the intellectuals in Nanyang who are the editor of newspapers(sender),and the newspaper industry of Malaya(media).Chapter 2 discusses the women issue written in the supplement of Lat Pau,which was the most discussed issue among all the issues concerned during the New Culture Movement. The topics related to women issue include marriage, childbirth, haircut, education, etc.Chapter 3 is about the religious belief issue discussed on the supplement of Lat Pau,which was also one of the deeply concerned issues during the New Culture Movement. The number of articles discussing religious belief issue on Lat Pau increased sharply between the years of 1922-1923,which is believed to be the impact of the anti-religion movement in China in 1922.Among these articles,anti-religion was mainstream, while supporters of religion were minority, which most of them were Christian. There were also a few opinions which acknowledge religion partially.Based on the study on the supplement of Lat Pau between the years of 1922-1923,the spreading of the New Culture Movement to Singapore is a certain fact. However, the New Culture Movement in Singapore in this period was basically homogeneous to the one in China, not only the issues and opinions were similar, but originality and localization were also hardly seen. This is caused by poor education level of the Chinese society of Singapore and their nationalistic Chinese identity.
