Popular science text is written to disseminate scientific knowledge.The contents should not only be accurate and reliable,but also easy to understand for public.Therefore,translators are supposed to transmit popular science texts in accuracy and intelligibility so as to match target readers' related knowledge properly.The source text of this report is an excerpt of A Farewell to Ice by Peter Wadhams,which was published in 2017.The author has been studying ice first –hand since 1970,completing 50 trips to the world's poles and observing the changes over the course of nearly five decades.In order to make Chinese readers further understand the relationship between ice and human,a high-quality translated version is essential.Based upon Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,the report analyses and summarizes the translation of the excerpt of A Farewell to Ice.In the process of translation,the translator exerts all efforts to follow the rule that meaning is superior to form.What's more,the translator also expands the scope of the translatability and focuses on the significance and the spirit of the original text.The translator mainly explores the translations strategies which can be applied to dealing with noun phrase translation such as structure conversion of noun phrase,contextualization,and culture-load terms in popular sciences text.To increase the readability,the translator adopts some translation methods such as addition,contextualization and domestication in the translation procession.In addition,the translator summarizes implication in the course of the translation hoping to enlighten and inspire future translators.
