| This report is based on the Chinese-English translation.The source text was selected from the second part of Chapter 4 of Records of Streets and Alleys in Chengdu,which contains Qianwei Street,Coach Station Street,Da Fujian Ying Alley and XiaoFujian Ying Alley,Mazhen Street,Madao Street,Xidu Street and Dongdu Street,Zhongdao Street,Zhongdao Back Street and Zhongdao West Alley,Jianghan Road,Luoyang Road,Kunming Road and Baixia Road,Cihui Tang Street,Yuying Tang Street and Mingzhou Alley.As an informative text,it created a vivid and colorful image of Chengdu by tracing the history and culture of streets and alleys in Chengdu.The author selected the Skopos theory as the guidance for this translation practice,because it focuses on the expression of the target text and the acceptability of its receivers,and the rules of skopos,coherence and fidelity to achieve the readability,acceptability and practicability of the target text matches the nature of the translation project.In the process of translation,the author encountered difficulties in two aspects,lexical level and syntactic level.In the source text,many words of the source text had no corresponding English words and lots of long and difficult sentences lack of some sentence components.The author summarized seven translation methods by referring to various parallel texts and related materials: literal translation plus annotation,free translation plus annotation,addition,omission,division,combination and conversion.The author analyzed some typical examples in this project under the guidance of the Skopos theory and produced this report by summarizing the practical experiences.This practice proved that the Skopos theory can guide traditional Chinese cultural texts,and the target text,conforming to the three principles,achieved the purpose of translation.Furthermore,it can also create a new perspective for foreign readers to recognize Chengdu in a more intuitive and authentic way,so that enhanced the influence of Chengdu in the international community. |
