Jostein Gaarder is a well-known contemporary philosophical and popular novelist, who likes to view the world with a mystical perspective, explaining the ultimate meaning of the fundamental problems of the universe, life and death. Therefore,it is an indispensable aspect to explore the purport and value behind his mystical narration.Throughout Gaarder's novels and relevant research material,we can find that the themes, narrative forms and value pursuit of his novels have all kinds of connections with his local environment, the prevailing philosophical and literary trends in the 20 th century.Firstly, the unique natural environment and literary tradition of northern Europe inspired Gaarder and inspired his mysticism.Secondly, the influence of philosophical thoughts, which provided the theoretical basis for his mysticism. Finally, the influence of the western literary trends, especially Borges' literary creation idea, had a profound influence on Gaarder.Gaarder used a lot of post-modernist narrative techniques in constructing the textual world. However,no matter the arrangement and setting of coincidence and suspense,or the description of dreams and the application of layered and cross-layered narrative techniques, these narrative strategies all reflect the mystery of the universe and life.As a poetic exploration and reflection on the original questions of human beings, the mystery in Gaarder's works provided him with a philosophical approach to explore the issues of universe and life.In the text,he not only revealed the mystery of the universe, life and death for readers with mysterious brushwork, but also opened up a new path for the development of philosophical novels by using mysterious narration to construct the text.
