Abstract/Summary:
Based on Byram’s intercultural communicative competence, this paper intends to offer some implications for cultural awareness cultivation by applying the reading circles in English class.A two-month case study of combining reading circles with the cultivation of cultural awareness was conducted in a class of senior two.In this process, the author obtained the students’ classroom performance, feedback and reading effect by classroom observation, interview with the students and reflection journals. The ideas put forward by the lesson study team was also employed in the process of implementing the lesson so as to improve the three rounds of teaching design and practice. The results showed that different characters in reading circles could be used to focus on training different aspects of cultural awareness, with word master mainly for knowledge, discussion leader mainly for attitude, cultural collector and connector mainly for skills and critical cultural awareness. In terms of the characters for cultivating skills and critical cultural awareness, due to the limitation of students’ level,it is difficult to achieve the expected results.Students showed positive attitudes towards reading circles although they had some difficulties in doing that. Therefore, teachers may employ reading circles to cultivate cultural awareness in English teaching. When assigning characters, teachers should take students’ English levels into consideration and focus more on the aspect of skills and critical cultural awareness.Due to the short time and limited samples, the results yielded from this study still need to be testified in further research.
