A Comparative Study Of Translation Of FID In Persuasion From The Perspective Of Translator's Subjectivities

The thesis makes a comparative study on translations of Free Indirect Discourse(FID)in Persuasion by Sun Zhili and Qiu Yin on the basis of the translator's subjectivity.Translator's subjectivities refer to the influences,both internal and external ones,on translators in the process of translation.Given that FID,normally considered as a freer version of an ostensibly indirect form,with an omission of reporting clause,tense and pronoun of Indirect Speech(IS),is frequently employed in Persuasion,specific analysis is made to compare the translations of FID by Sun and Qiu.Comparative studies,through the method of description,are carried out in ordinary and special cases,so as to indicate the differences of FID translations in different contexts.Through comparative studies,the author finds out that the translation of FID is different from that of other literary texts.It is strongly expressed in lexical expressions,punctuation(dash,exclamation,question mark)and special expressions(reflexive pronouns,irony,feminism).Consequently,the translation of FID is slightly different from that of the ordinary text.The translator should adopt a suitable translation strategy to translate on the basis of full understanding of the usage and function of FID.Moreover,translators' translation is also inclined by such influential internal elements as translation purposes,language sensitivity,prejudice,experience,and aesthetic value,and external factors as cultural background,historical background and age differences.Surprisingly,external factors in translation are overestimated by critics,while internal forces are proved to be more significant.Moreover,weak language sensitivity,prejudice and a lack of background knowledge are usually blamed for misunderstandings and mistakes in FID translation.Hence,it requires the translator to further improve their language sensitivity,gain deeper insight into the background of the original text,and deepen the understanding of FID as a writing technique and a figurative style,so as to present accurate and proper translation that is willingly accepted by the Target Language(TL)reader.
