The problem of underachieving students is a common problem with countries that implement the compulsory education system.Studies find that the proportion of underachievers accounted for 7%-8% of all students,and in some schools it reached 15%.English is a tool for communication.The learning of vocabulary is the basis of effective English learning.Based on Babanski's theory of concentric circles,this study uses questionnaires,interviews and think-aloud experiment as the research instruments to explore the influence of the learning experiences,family background,learning motivation and attitudes toward English underachievers vocabulary learning,and observe the application of learning strategies of two underachievers in real vocabulary learning situations,aiming to discover the following three problems: Firstly,the reasons that affect the vocabulary learning efficiency of English underachieving students;Secondly,The problem of strategy used in the real vocabulary learning process;Thirdly,ways to improve the efficiency of vocabulary learning in the existing situation.After 15 weeks of research,with a comprehensive analysis of two underachieving students' families,learning experiences and actual vocabulary learning situation,the author found that:(1)Students' low learning motivation and misbehavior;(2)Autocratic and laissez-faire families affect the vocabulary learning of underachievers;(3)The teaching method is monotonous and boring;Students' vocabulary learning feedback method is arid and mismatch;The teaching of vocabulary learning strategies is not mature and does not pay attention to review and consolidation.Pay no attention to the transmission of phonetic knowledge.According to the actual situation,the author puts forward the following suggestions:(1)Enhancing vocabulary teaching;(2)Teacher paying attention to the cultivation of students' interests in vocabulary learning(3)Students take the initiative to change their learning attitude and enhance their learning motivation;(4)Parents providing reasonable and scientific guidance of children's learning.This study collects two independent descriptions of students and objective observations of researchers to fully understand the situation of vocabulary learning and summarize the problems in the process of vocabularylearning,which has practical guiding significance for the transformation to teachers' vocabulary teaching methods and the improvement of vocabulary learning efficiency of underachievers.
