The translation material is excerpted from Rose Alexander's novel,Under an Amber Sky,which is a literary fiction about love, sadness, friendship, new life and discovery. The story mainly takes place in Montenegro, which is located in the southwestern part of the Balkans. It is a very mysterious and beautiful place where people are simple and warmhearted.Sophie, the heroine, lost her husband when she was young. In order to soothe her great trauma,Sophie goes to the exotic and beautiful Montenegro for a trip with the help and companion of a good friend. She wants to have a new start in that brand new place. In the process of reading the novel, the translator finds that the language in the source text is elegant, diverse and properly arranged to present the plot of the story which is really remarkable. The preface, the first and second chapters of this novel have been taken as the target text for this translation practice. There are plenty of descriptive phrases and expressions in the original text, which are often presented in long and complex sentences that are difficult for the translator to deal with. Therefore, the translator needs to understand the background information and the author's writing purpose and flexibly convert them from the perspective of contrast between English and Chinese. As a theoretical framework,Nida's functional equivalence theory and some other translation techniques have been adopted to guide the translation of the novel, such as amplification, omission, conversion of part of speech and division, etc. The translator hopes that these techniques can help to solve the difficulties and problems met in the translation process.
