The monk is a work written by Lewis,a British Gothic novelist, when he was young. As a Gothic novel appeared in the era of rational advocacy,it has been criticized by many people once it was published. The Gothic horror in the novel not only frightens the readers, but also presents an ethical tragedy caused by the protagonist's inability to control his own lust. This thesis takes the method of literary ethical criticism as the starting point to explore the ethical value and moral tendency contained in the works. This paper is divided into three parts: introduction, main body and conclusion. The foreword introduces the background and significance of the study, summarizes the research status of the monk at home and abroad, and introduces the methods of Literary Ethics Criticism. The main part of the article consists of four chapters. The first chapter introduces Ambrose's ethical identity at different levels, analyzes his ethical choices and ethical taboos, from which we can see the harm of breaking the ethical order that must be observed in the development of human civilization. The second chapter discusses the conflict between the human factor and the animal factor in Ambrose, and explores the root of Ambrose's destruction of ethical order. The destruction of monasteries on his sound personality plays a crucial role in this process. The third chapter reveals the positive effect of these elements on the maintenance of ethical order by analyzing the grotesque and terrorist elements of the novel itself. In the fourth chapter,by exploring the position of the Gothic novel in the period of its birth, the author analyzes the rebellion of the Gothic novel against the rationalistic society at that time.By paying attention to the irrational level of human nature,we can guide people to think about the causes of ethical tragedy, which is beneficial to deal with the relationship between the nature of good will and the nature of reason, and to construct a harmonious ethical order. The conclusion part summarizes the whole paper, reiterates the importance of ethical order to the development of human civilization, and puts forward some thoughts on how to build ethical order.
