Application Of Sentence Structures Shift In Scientific Text Translation From The Perspective Of Translation Shift Theory

In recent decades,global climate change has attracted attention among people at home and abroad.Imported English books on meteorological science are beneficial for imparting the basic knowledge of meteorological science and technology.The translator has chosen Chapter One Climate Science Basics and part of Chapter Two Extreme Weather and Climate Change from the book Climate Change: What Everyone Needs to Know written by Joseph Romm as the source text.The source text introduces the basic knowledge of climate science,extreme weather and the reason of rapid climate changes.The source text is about meteorological science and technology belonging to English for Science and Technology(EST)with various complex sentences.The source text has a mass of complex sentences and it refers to the shift of sentence structures between English and Chinese,which adds the difficulty of translation.In order to avoid deviation and mistranslation,the author chooses J.C.Catford's structure shifts of Translation Shift Theory as the theory framework and employs different strategies to address the difficulty when shifting sentence structures.The report studies the application of sentence structure shift in scientific text translation with three major translation strategies,including the shift between affirmative sentences and negative sentences,the shift from passive-voice sentences to active-voice sentences and the shift from postpositive attributives to prepositive attributives.Through analyzing specific cases,the translator draws the conclusion: in order to accurately convey the original meaning of the source text,firstly the translator needs to understand differences of sentence structures between English and Chinese by analyzing the specific cases in scientific text.Secondly,the translator should shift sentences in an appropriate way so as to clearly present the expression of English sentences in Chinese language,which may conform to Chinese expression.This report is composed of five chapters.Chapter One narrates the characteristics of the source text,the reason of topic selection and the layout of the report.Chapter Two describes the translation process,including translation preparation,translation process and translation proofreading.Chapter Three gives a brief introduction to J.C.Catford's Translation Shift Theory and its significance of translation shift in the translation of meteorological science and technology text.Chapter Four is the core part.Based on specific cases,it generalizes the translation strategies for the sentence structures shift under the guidance of Structure Shifts.The last chapter put forwards the translator's findings and experience,and points out limitations of this translation report.
