Challenging the Monolingual Mindset,co-authored by 16 scholars and compiled by Prof.John Hajek and Prof.Yvette Slaughter, two linguistic experts from the University of Melbourne in Australia, and published in 2014,consists of three parts of 14 theses. The author of the report chooses the third and fourth articles in the second part for translation. The former is about the language maintenance and sociolinguistic continuity of Macedonian among first-generation speakers of Macedonians from Aegean Macedonia and the Republic of Macedonia, and the latter is about the role of professional advice in shaping language choice in migrant-background families with deaf children. This report is divided into four chapters.Chapter One mainly introduces the background of the translation task, analysis of the source text, and the process of translation.Chapter Two describes the origin and development of Communication Translation(CT hereinafter),the comparison between CT and Semantic Translation(ST hereinafter),and the characteristics and translation strategies of social science text.Chapter Three compares English complex sentences with Chinese counterparts from the perspective of English and Chinese sentence structures with case analyses involved.Chapter Four summarizes the translator's achievements and discoveries in this translation project, and analyzes the shortcomings of translation practice.Challenging the Monolingual Mindset is a typical social science book, which contains a large number of complex sentences, and the translating of complex sentences is a major difficulty in the translation process. The study on how to translate the complex sentences in social science text is of great significance for the translation research of similar types of texts. In this translation report, under the guidance of Newmark's CT theory, the translator discusses the translation methods of complex sentences in the aspects of synchronizing, reversing, dividing, recasting, embedding, and integrating.
