In the long history of animation development, experimental animation,as a special branch of animation, has always occupied a pivotal position.Unlike commercial animation, which firmly occupies the mainstream market, experimental animation has a strong personal style and artistic form. With its unique pioneering and exploratory, experimental animation brings endless vitality to the whole animation market. The artistic style of experimental animation can be different and the form is changeable. However, the role is always the main body of an animation performance, and it is no exception in experimental animation. It can be a person or an animal, not only has the role of leading the development of the whole story, but also can become a carrier for the author to convey his own feelings. Therefore, the shaping of a character is particularly important in the production process of the whole animation. In the process of making a character,we should not only consider his appearance design, such as the appearance of the characters and the clothes they wear, but also pay attention to the connotation conveyed by the whole character because the experimental animation focuses on the expression of personality and thought.Only by controlling the performance of a role and adjusting it dynamically, and ensuring that the relationship between form and connotation is taken into account, can we ensure that a character's personality is lively and interesting. This paper first summarizes and analyses some classical experimental animation works from the material form and spiritual connotation of characters in experimental animation, then from the perspective of practical creation, combined with the graduation design of the author to analyze the shaping and expression of characters in experimental animation.
