Intertextuality Research On Subtitling Translation Of American Version Of Legend Of Zhen Huan

Promoting TV series to overseas is an important way to spread Chinese culture.The costume play Legend of Zhen Huan is widely praised in China and its adapted English version Empresses in the Palace,has successfully landed on Netflix,the main platform in the United States,which is a breakthrough of Chinese teleplays in the overseas transmission.A heated discussion about subtitling translation is triggered in China because of that.How to make a high-quality translation to convey the original essence is a matter worthy of careful study because it can play an extraordinary effective role in disseminating Chinese culture.Intertextuality theory provides a new perspective for the detailed and comprehensive study of translation.Based on Hatim and Mason's intertextuality translation theory,this thesis elaborates the subtitling of Empresses in the Palace from the perspective of manifest intertextuality and constitutive intertextuality.The study findings show that the main forms of manifest intertextuality in the translated subtitling of this costume play are quotation and allusion,among which quotation is the frequently-used method.The utilization of quotation enhances the expressing effect and conveys the meaning of the original text at a deeper level.The thesis also reveals that the semiotic status and intentionality status are retained in most cases of constitutive intertextuality and this is beneficial to the target language readers' understanding of Chinese cultural elements.In addition,the primary methods adopted in the translation include: literal translation,free translation,addition/deletion and division.The proper use of these methods plays a positive role in the dissemination of cultural elements in the drama and makes the intertextuality of the subtitling more obvious.Through the study of the subtitling translation,it can be seen clearly that intertextuality analysis is of great significance in guiding the translation of the film and television series,because it helps to deepen the target language audience's understanding of the plots,thus promoting the overseas dissemination of film and television works.
