This thesis is an E-C translation practice report. The author of the report selects Chapter two,Chapter thirteen and Chapter fourteen from the book The Culture Code as the source text.Written by an American author Daniel Coyle,The Culture Code is about business management, which aims to explore how to nurture excellent corporate culture, enhance team cohesion, and make teamwork more efficient and fruitful.Under the guidance of Catford's translation shifts theory, this thesis explores the application of this theory in non-literary translation based on the translation of the excerpts from The Culture Code.In this report, language features and translation difficulties of the source text are analyzed with translation examples to demonstrate the application of level shifts and category shifts. In the report, level shifts(including shifts of tense and aspect and shifts of number)and category shifts(including structure shifts, class shifts and unit shifts)are analyzed in detail.More specifically,in structure shifts, shifts from passive voice to active voice, from inanimate subjects to animate subjects and from post-positioned attributives to pre-positioned attributives are expounded with examples. In class shifts, the report exemplifies the change of part of speech(including shifts from English prepositions to Chinese verbs and shifts from English nouns to Chinese verbs). In unit shifts, shifts of English grammatical units(including words, phrases and sentences)are discussed. The research shows that the application of Catford's translation shifts theory in the translation of business management books is of pragmatic significance.Nevertheless, shifts in the theory only exist below or on the sentence level, failing to cover the non-linguistic level beyond sentences, such as cultural elements.Hence, the author of the report proposes culture shifts as supplementary countermeasures so as to make the translation more idiomatic.
