An Eco-translatological Study Of Translation Of Historical Novels

The historical novel One Minute to Midnight,which describes Cuba's nuclear missile crisis,is well received by the media and celebrities in the United States.At present,the only Chinese version of One Minute to Midnight is co-translated by Tao Zehui and Zhao Jinsheng,editors of Yilin Publishing House.It was published by Social Science Literature Publishing House in 2015.Under the framework of Eco-translatology,this thesis takes a descriptive approach to analyze Tao and Zhao's Chinese version of One Minute to Midnight,attempting to explore translation principles and methods of translating historical novels.Through the analysis of Chinese version of One Minute to Midnight,this thesis expounds the key points in the process of translating historical novels,with a view to providing some reference for future studies of translation on historical novels.Based on the theoretical framework of Eco-translatology,it is found that(1)in eco-translation ethics,principles of “balance and harmony” and “translator responsibility” are basic ethical principles that cannot be ignored in the process of translating historical novels;(2)the translation of historical novels should not only take“multi-dimensional” adaptation and selection as important translation principles,but also take the balance between source text and target text as primary standard;(3)the process of translating historical novels refers to translators' transformation from linguistic dimension,cultural dimension and communicative dimension based on the adaptation to translational eco-environment.In the Chinese version of One Minute to Midnight,Chinese four-character structures and Chinese culture-loaded words are used in order to reproduce linguistic characteristics of the target text.In respect of complex sentences in the source text,division and reorganization are employed,aiming toconform to the reading habits of target readers.In terms of some contents which are repeated or lack of further expression in the source text,omission and addition are adopted so as to realize communicative intention.
