As a category of fictive motion, emanation is one of a favorably discussed topic in the academic circles,no matter at home and abroad.Out of the range of fictive-motion categories,Talmy(2012a:104)selects emanation to define classify.Emanation is basically the fictive motion of something intangible emerging from a source. The intangible entity is what moves fictively and is itself fictive, and its fictive motion, does not depend on any factive motion by some tangible entity nor on any localized observer.According to the theory of Talmy’s motion event framework,Figure(F),Ground(G),Motion(M)and Path(P)are main elements in a basic motion event.Since the figure is intangible in emanation,it can be the subject itself of structure or hide in the subject. The ground provides the frame of reference for the moving figure.Dividing these elements into object and motion event, this study selects the corpus from Chinese and English literature and adopts the method of combining description and explanation to compare the similarities and differences. It is found that both Chinese and English nearly cover all categories of emanation and have a high degree overlap in the choice of figure and ground. The similarities of Chinese and English shows that these two languages have similar cognitive mechanism and highly developed language system. In the aspect of verb and satellite,Chinese and English lexicalization expression have some difference. Some verbs of Chinese, coming from ancient Chinese,is the combination of path, manner and other information. What’s more, with Chinese parataxis in mind, native Chinese speaker sometimes omit the preposition. In English, the particles play the role of the satellite, which shows the information of path.By comparing the emanation in Chinese and English, the thesis gets some illuminations in field of teaching Chinese as second language.Firstly, the study observes the usage or acquisition in language learning. Then it finds out the meaning of teaching emanation in area of cognition and culture.Obeying the principle of right grammar structure, the teacher could try to combine the traditional teaching method and cognitive teaching approach.
