As the winner of the Goncourt Prize for L'Amant in 1984,Marguerite Duras has finished remarkable works in literary circle thanks to her unique writing style.Throughout her entire life, she never stopped writing. And in her published works which include novels, essays and plays, etc.the enigmatic and metaphorical styles have always captured the attention of readers as well as researchers. The words ‘see',‘look' and ‘gaze' as well as similar expressions appear frequently in Duras' s works. However,it is not just a simple visual act,and the implied metaphorical meaning behind these words needs to be further analyzed. As an important concept in the field of cultural criticism,‘the gaze' refers to the act of looking which involves power, desire as well as identity consciousness.By resorting to theories such as Foucault's gaze theorie and those of Lacan's psychoanalysis,we try to well study the metaphors hidden behind ‘the gaze',using the examples of several texts such as L'Amant,Un barrage contre le Pacifique,et Emily L.and so on.The main part of this thesis will be divided into three chapters. The first chapter is used to analyze the female protagonists' position as objects ‘gazed' by men.In the second chapter,by analyzing two kinds of ‘gaze',we try to explain the reconstruction of the female themselves as ‘gazed' subjects. In the last chapter,we focus our attention on the author's narrative strategies through which the novelist succeeds in demonstrating the complex essence of ‘the gaze' and the feminine condition.By means of deciphering ‘the gaze' in these novels, this thesis aims to clarify the value of several female characters in the construction of female identity,to fully reveal the author's opinions on female and even human existence, and perhaps we could offer a new perspective to further study Duras's works.
