English Translation of Chinese Classics(ETCC)has become a hot topic and promoted the dissemination and intercultural communication of Chinese culture in English-speaking countries in recent years. As the first collection of Chinese poems,Book of Poetry occupies a pivotal position in the history of Chinese literature.Scholars at home and abroad have studied it from the perspective of literature and culture. In this study,Xu Yanchong's translation of Book of Poetry will be taken as an example to study the application of Relevance-Adaptation Model(RT-AT Model)in the translation of metaphor in order to obtain some inspirations on metaphor translation in poetry.RT-AT model was proposed by Chinese scholar Yang Ping in 2001.Formed based on Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson's Relevance Theory and Jef Verschueren's adaptation theory,RT-AT model overcomes the shortcomings of inadequate description of Relevance Theory and the drawbacks of inadequate explanation of adaptation theory, and extends itself to various fields, such as translation.By applying RT-AT Model in this study, the author finds out:1.RT-AT Model does play a role in the translation of metaphor in poetry, and it is suitable for the study of metaphor translation in the target language.2.The adaptation to the target text guides the translators achieve optimal relevance in ostensive-inferential process and effect the translator's choice making.3.The success of the translator's ostensive-inferential process and the propriety of words directly affect that whether the target reader find the optimal relevance or not.The quality of the translation of metaphors to a certain extent depends on the translator's literary attainments.4.Only when a translator finds the optimal relevance in source text and conveying its communicative and informative intention properly to his target readers, can he be a qualified translator.
