Reading skill,as a comprehensive skill,plays an important role in the four basic skills of English listening,speaking,reading and writing.It reflects the students’ English proficiency,and takes an increasing proportion in the college entrance English examination.However,the traditional reading teaching mostly adopts the “top-down” teaching mode,ignoring the cultivation of students’ reading competence and thinking ability.The study,taking genres as the starting point,applies mind map to English reading comprehension teaching(ERCT)of Grade 10.It aims to provide ERCT with a new effective teaching tool to promote the development of students’ reading competence and improve the effect of ERCT.Mind map is an effective graphic thinking tool proposed by Tony Buzan.It uses keywords,symbols,diagrams,colors and other ways to transform the abstract and intangible concept into something concrete and graphic,in order to promote people’s understanding and improve people’s memory retention and logical thinking.Based on the related research of mind map and the current situation of ERCT in China,as well as the constructivism theory and schema theory,two research questions are proposed:(1)What effects will the mind map have on students’ reading interest?(2)What effects will the mind map have on students’ reading competence?The study selected two classes of Grade 10 in Huanggang,Hubei Province as the research participants,and conducted a twelve-week teaching research.This study mainly adopts the methods of questionnaire survey,experiment research and interview.In the experimental class,teacher uses mind map in ERCT,while the control class uses traditional reading teaching methods.By analyzing the questionnaires data and reading comprehension scores via SPSS 23.0,as well as considering of the interview results,this study indicates that:(1)through the design,practice,observation and summary of mind map,students’ reading competence is constantly improved.Rather than simply focusing on the words,sentences,and grammar of the article,students pay more attention to grasp the article from a macro perspective;(2)the application of mind map to reading teaching enable students to change from passive acceptance of knowledge to thinking,exploration and practice actively.It makes the boring reading classes more vivid and creative,which greatly stimulates students’ interest in reading learning.It can be concluded that the application of mind map has played a positive role in promoting ERCT.Therefore,teachers are encouraged to apply the mind map tool to reading teaching to improve the effectiveness of ERCT.Besides,this paper provides suggestions on empirical teaching method for ERCT as well as some implications for the future research of mind map in ERCT. |
