This experiment is to test the influence of knowledge schema on the fluency of consecutive interpreting.Schema refers to the storage unit of knowledge in people's brain. The sum of schema is the whole knowledge of a person.Knowledge schema refers to the background knowledge related to the textual content. It is reflected in the interpreter's familiarity with the interpreting theme. At present, studies at home and abroad have manifested that knowledge schema is directly related to the quality of interpreting.Understanding the knowledge schema related to the source language plays an active role in each aspect of interpreting. However, previous studies have centered upon the field of simultaneous interpreting, focusing on the summary of experience and the role of schema theory in various stages of interpreting and the relationship between knowledge schema and interpreting effectiveness.Few scholars have studied the relationship between knowledge schema and interpreting fluency on the basis of experiments. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the influence of knowledge schema on the interpreting fluency through the way of interpreting experiment. The participants of this experiment are 12 first-year postgraduates majoring in English Interpreting at the School of Foreign Studies of Hebei Normal University. They were divided into experimental and control group. The experiment material was an English introduction of traditional Chinese medicine. Before interpreting, participants in the experimental group could get some background knowledge related to traditional Chinese medicine as an independent variable, and other conditions were consistent in both groups.New Class system and Elan were used to record and transcribe the texts for the participants. The texts of non-fluency were marked with different symbols and their duration time was also recorded. Then,by comparing the data of two groups, the author analyzed the relationship between knowledge schema and non-fluency phenomena in interpreting. The results show that mastering knowledge schema related to the theme of interpreting materials can improve the interpreters' interpreting fluency. This report puts forward some implications for interpreting learning. It is hoped that in the process of interpreting learning and practice in the future, interpreting learners can improve their interpreting fluency by mastering relevant knowledge schema.
