Syria is an ill-fated country, since its independence in 1946,it has been influenced by a variety of trends of thought, made a variety of attempts, and caused instability in the country. These trends of thought include Arab nationalism,Greater Syria, and the Ba’th socialism.Among them,Arab nationalism was born in the Syrian provinces of the Ottoman Empire in the mid-19 th century, which advocated the unity of the Arab nation and established a unified Arab country that included all Arab region.Syria is an active practitioner of Arab nationalism and regards itself as a leader. The Arab League formed by Syria and Egypt was an attempt to establish a unified Arab nation-state,but failed in the end. After the first World War,the Syrian region was divided into four regions: Syria,Lebanon,Jordan and Palestine.Syria advocated the merger of the above areas to form a unified Syrian state, which is Greater Syria, but it clashed with the independent nation-state tendency of Lebanon and the independence tendency of Palestine, resulting in tensions between Syria and neighboring countries and regions. After World War II,relations between Syria and the Soviet Union continued to strengthen. With the Ba’th Socialist Party in power in Syria and the influence of socialist thoughts on Syria,Syria began socialist construction. At the same time,Syria and Iraq competed for the leadership of the Ba’th Party, resulting in tensions between the two countries.None of these thoughts have put Syria on track. The most urgent thing in Syria is to strengthen nation-state identity and increase the enthusiasm of its citizens for the country. |
