Analysis Of Empathy And De-empathy In Chinese Translation Of A Song Of Ice And Fire From The Perspective Of Deixis

As the word that express deictic information related to context in the discourse,deixis frequently appears in the Chinese translation of A Song of Ice and Fire,and become a powerful means to shape characters,embody and promote empathy and deempathy.However,the current academic research on A Song of Ice and Fire mainly focuses on the background,characters,magic elements,translation skills,writing techniques and other aspects of the work,while the important characteristics,POV writing techniques reflected by deixis and empathy and de-empathy,has not been studied.At the same time,previous studies on this literature mainly analyzed it from a subjective perspective,while the research on the cognitive causes of empathy and deempathy is still blank.Therefore,this thesis combines qualitative and quantitative method,selects the specific artistic effect empathy and de-empathy as the research object,and studies the contribution of deixis to this artistic effect in this work.In view of these considerations,this thesis puts forward the following research questions:a.How are the empathy and de-empathy between characters reflected by the usage of deixis?b.How are the empathy and de-empathy between readers and characters contributed by the usage of deixis?c.Is there any conversional usage of deixis in the conversational activities among characters in this literary work,what are their contributions to achieve artistic effects?The significance of the thesis mainly concerns the following aspects:Based on the combination of qualitative and quantitative method from the perspective of deixis would lead to a more objective analysis of the literature.On the whole,this study starts from the epic fantasy literature,trying to give a good explanation to empathy and de-empathy in A Song of Ice and Fire from the perspective of deixis.In this way,readers can better understand the pragmatic empathy and de-empathy embodied by the author in the creation of characters and the description of their relationships.This thesis focuses on analysis of empathy and de-empathy in A Song of Ice and Fire not only from the perspective of personal deixis,but also from several other aspects such as social deixis,discourse deixis in Point of View theory.Besides,the detailed classification of social deixis contributes to the Empathy Degree.What is more,the dissertation applies Politeness and Impoliteness Theory to the illustration of A song of Ice and Fire,giving explanations to the abnormal linguistic behaviors of characters.Based on the research,here are the conclusions I draw from the analysis: a.The frequency of each house’s point of view coincides with story line andliterature background of houses b.The usage of deixis coincides with characters’ image,contributing to the shaping of characters and relationships between them c.The quantity of the character’s point of view correlates with each character’spopularity d.The scores of deixis in different periods can well reflect their relationshipsand the change of relationships e.The exceptional results can be well explained by the Politeness andImpoliteness Theory...
